Easter Egg Hunt, Part I

Okay, since we were not with family on Easter this year and Griffin does not have any siblings yet, we decided, against our better judgment, to go to a city Easter Egg Hunt. After all, everyone needs to experience a egg hunt on Easter, right? So this was at a big park in Round Rock and we were advised to arrive 30 minutes early. We were doing good to get there 15 min early and there was a LONG line already. The hunt was divided into age groups- Griff was in the 0-4 group- and 1 parent could go with him. At 9 they ushered all of us in and we made a big circle on the inside of a fence line. I could tell right away that we were in trouble. First, Griffin was the only child (so it seemed) who was not standing perfectly still by his parent (me). He kept wandering into the egg hunt area, swinging his basket all around as he went. Second, I could see that there were not enough eggs for all the "hunters" although there was a lot of candy thrown about. So we wait (me chasing Griffin) for about 10 minutes while we wait on those who are late (they're late- not our fault). When the horn sounds parents take off dragging their kids behind them. Griffin and I head for the first egg we see. With me directing, he picks up the egg and puts it in his basket (takes about 1 minute to do this). We make our way to the second egg and get it. By the time he has picked this one up, I realize that I can see no more eggs and if we keep walking around to get eggs, we will get nothing. So we make a split second change in strategy and go for candy. As I am showing Griffin where the candy is and he picks it up, piece by piece, tries to eat it through the wrapper, and then finally puts it in his basket, I notice other moms picking up candy by the handfuls and tossing it in their child's basket. I realize now that I was not the correct parent choice for this job- Nathan would have gotten a lot more candy, no matter what it took. But Griffin had fun, he had no idea he probably came in last in "amount of stuff picked up". We walked around a little while (he finally got the hang of it when there was nothing left- spotting empty wrappers and leaves and saying "there it is!"), then went to play on the playground and with the ducks in the pond (the biggest hit of all). They also had a fire truck, so that made it worth the trip. Here are a few pictures of our first (and probably only) community egg hunt. For some reason, my pictures show up as computer scribble when I am creating my post, so I cannot make comments under each picture. I will let you draw your own conclusions- I do have to say, though, I think the 4th picture makes my point- even Griffin looks a little disappointed in his "loot". We did have a hunt at our house on Sunday- more to come about that later.

At least Griffin had fun! Next year we will make sure he finds lots more eggs. One question ... basket, treasure hunt or both on Easter morning?
